A resolution presented recently in the United Nations
Security Council to condemn the recent chemical attack has been vetoed by
Russia. The resolution was presented jointly by US, UK and France, however,
Russia still chose to back its ally for the eighth time and go against the
majority wishes of the council.
Out of the countries present, China, Ethiopia and Kazakhstan abstained from
voting. Bolivia backed Russia on the veto.
The Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad is being held
responsible by the Western communities of the chemical attack which killed 70
people and critically injured more than 100 others. Russia, however denies any
kind of connection of the Syrian government to the event and claimed that Syria
had already given up their chemical stockpile.
US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley expressed her discontent
with Russia by saying, “You are isolating yourselves from the international
community every time one of Assad's planes drop another barrel bomb on
civilians and every time Assad tries to starve another community to death.”
If the proposed resolution would have been passed in the
council, then the Syrian government would have been told to provide military
information, including flight logs, from the day of the alleged attack, and
provide access to air bases.
Russia has called for an independent international
investigation of the issue, asking how Western powers had come to the
conclusion so fast, that the Syrian government is responsible for it.
This issue has put another damper in the relation between
Russia and US which allegedly had already been deteriorating under Trump
presidency.
